Today, we’re beginning an incredible journey—a sacred walk around God Shiva himself. Yes, today, we’re walking around Arunachala, the ‘Mountain of Fire.’
This isn’t just any mountain. Arunachala is the physical form of Shiva, where history, devotion, and divine energy come alive. Every rock, every tree on this hill pulses with spiritual power. It’s said that simply by walking around this sacred hill, our sins are washed away, and we get closer to moksha, or liberation.
In this journey, we will be visiting many incredible temples and ashrams, including a temple dedicated to Goddess Kaali, the eight sacred Ashta Lingam temples, an ancient temple dedicated to Draupadi, the wife of the Pancha Pandavas, temples for God Shiva and Goddess Parvati, Goddess Varahi, God Anjaneya and an amazing Vishnu Paada Temple. We’ll also explore an ancient hole that is believed to grant moksha, or liberation, along with several sacred ponds and even encounters with some wild animals along the way.

This walk is called Giri Pradakshinam or Girivalam. As we make our way around Arunachala, we’ll visit eight powerful Lingams, known as the Ashta Lingams, along with many ancient temples, hidden shrines, and ashrams. So, let’s start this sacred journey. Aum Namah Shivaya!

You can start the Giri Pradakshinam from any point along the hill, but it’s important to finish at the same spot where you began. Traditionally, most people begin at the Annamalaiyar Temple as it’s considered especially auspicious. You can do this walk on any day, but it’s even more powerful on Pournami or full moon days. And if you’re here during the Karthigai Deepam festival, the energy of this place is truly something you have to experience. The full walk around the hill is about 14 kilometers, and it usually takes around 4-5 hours to complete.

The word Giri Valam literally means “walking around the mountain”—‘Giri’ means mountain, and ‘Valam’ means going around. But this is so much more than a physical journey; it’s a journey of faith, surrender, and devotion.

As we walk, we’ll come across many Lingams, temples, ashrams, and shrines. Some of these are incredibly old, and some are hidden so deeply they’re almost invisible. Devotees usually choose to walk barefoot, connecting directly with the sacred ground of Arunachala. Walking without shoes is believed to enhance the experience, allowing us to fully feel the divine energy beneath our feet. If you’re doing the walk barefoot, try to start early in the morning or later in the evening, as the ground can get very hot during the day. But if it gets difficult, don’t worry—there are shops along the way where you can buy slippers or socks.

Each day of the week brings unique blessings when you do the Giri Pradakshinam, so let me walk you through it.

On Sundays, this sacred walk connects us directly with God Shiva. It brings us closer to him, opening the doors to Shivaloka—Shiva’s divine realm. Walking on a Sunday also helps with curing physical illnesses and bringing strength to the body and spirit.

When we walk on Mondays, the weight of our past sins is lightened. Monday is a special day dedicated to Shiva, and by doing the Pradakshinam, we receive his blessings of mercy and forgiveness, which purify our hearts and souls.

On Tuesdays, the walk brings stability in our finances and protects us from fire-related incidents. Tuesdays also bring prosperity and growth, especially for those seeking success in their work and careers.

Wednesdays are a day of creative blessings. Walking around Arunachala on a Wednesday enhances our artistic abilities, knowledge, and skills. It’s a perfect day for students, artists, and anyone involved in creative pursuits.

Thursdays are all about wisdom and knowledge. By doing Giri Pradakshinam on a Thursday, we’re blessed with clarity in our studies, spiritual wisdom, and guidance from Gurus. It’s a powerful day for those seeking spiritual growth and knowledge.

On Fridays, this sacred walk brings wealth, prosperity, and family blessings. It’s especially beneficial for couples who are praying for a child. By walking on this day, they receive blessings for a happy and prosperous family life.

And Saturdays are for overcoming obstacles in business and career. Walking on a Saturday helps us achieve success in our work and removes the negative effects of unfavorable planetary positions, or Nava Graha doshas.
