Most students who come to me want to learn how to sing with vibrato. But learning to sing with straight tone, or the lack of vibrato, can be just as important. For classically trained singers, minimizing vibrato can be just as much of a struggle than achieving it.

Straight tone is used in musical theatre, modern pop, early music, like Medieval, Renaissance, and early Baroque, and much more. Most genres use a combination of straight tone and vibrato, so it's important to learn both. Think of that money note you hear belted in Broadway show tunes that's a long-held straight tone note that ends in vibrato.

Straight tone is perfectly healthy as long as it isn't created by forcing out too much air or by constricting your false vocal folds.
