Down-and-Out in Victorian London (Darkest 19th Century England)

The darkest abyss of homeless destitution was on the streets of Victorian London in 1890. William Booth, the founder of the Salvation Army discovered hundreds of vagrants on the embankment of the Thames struggling to find work, food and shelter. The size of the problem facing his efforts to help these poor people were set out in his book ‘In Darkest England and The Way Out’ where he reported a genuine account of meetings with homeless people in their own bleak words.
