The Soma Nomaoi festival dates back over a thousand years to the Heian Period (794-1185), when warlord Taira no Masakado, an ancestor of the Soma clan, used wild horses in military training exercises. Today's festival recreates a historical military exercise featuring a dramatic display of armored samurai on horseback.
