The hunt for our first species wasn’t easy…

I travelled across the Tasman chasing one of the hardest-fighting fish in the ocean— the Yellowtail Kingfish. After losing multiple fish to sharks and the reef, I finally managed to land a beast—my very first targeted species in this global mission.

But just when I thought I had scored the catch of the trip, the locals showed me what a real giant Kingfish looks like.

About the Yellowtail Kingfish (Seriola lalandi):
The Yellowtail Kingfish is one of the most powerful and iconic sportfish found in New Zealand waters and across the Pacific. Known locally as “Kingies,” they are prized for their speed, strength, and never-give-up fight.

These fish can be found around reefs, rocky coastlines, offshore pinnacles, and FADs (fish aggregating devices). They are highly aggressive predators, feeding on baitfish such as mackerel, kahawai, and squid. Their hunting style makes them a top target for both recreational and professional anglers.

Size & Records:
In New Zealand, Kingfish regularly grow over 20kg, with true giants reaching 40kg+ (90lb). The world record stands at over 52kg (114lb), cementing their reputation as one of the hardest-fighting fish you can catch.

The Fight:
Hooking a Kingfish is just the beginning. They are notorious for explosive runs, brutal headshakes, and a relentless drive to reef anglers at the first chance. Many fights end in bust-offs on sharp reef or when sharks move in, making every landed fish a true achievement.
