Anakin winces as he tries to clear his mind while wandering the crystalline caverns of Ilum. He tells himself to ignore the ticking clock and the other worries on his mind. What matters is that he accomplishes the task at hand. This is one of the most important steps on his Jedi journey: to find the crystal that would allow him to forge his lightsaber.

Yoda had explained the task well, to clear his mind. Crystals like this rarely appear on their own. The only way to find one is to let the Force guide him towards it. For the boy, it makes little sense, but so do half the things Yoda says, so Anakin trudges deeper. But after a moment, he decides to try again.

Taking a deep breath, he sits down on the cool floor and begins to meditate. But clearing his mind is easier said than done, as he feels something thumping in the back of his head. It is like a headache building, and Anakin cannot ignore it. He grimaces and swallows another breath, then exhales as if to force it out.

But rather than leave, the pain lingers, and in that moment, he feels a shift within his mind. When he tries to push the pain aside, he instead feels it in its entirety. It isn’t simple agony, but a thousand cries. They echo from the walls and disappear into the darkness beyond. In that moment, he realizes the pain wasn’t coming from within, but from the cave itself.

Scrambling to his feet, Anakin follows those screams. He takes another breath, letting the whispers wash over him again, then repeats it as he moves deeper. He only stops when he sees a cavern and within it, a weak white glow. It is like the light at the end of the tunnel, but as he approaches, the light does not grow larger.

Atop a crystalline stalagmite is a small crystal. The stone is a pale white, but there are flecks of red in it. Anakin has never seen anything like it before, but as he reaches his hand out, he can feel the pain in his head. It screams at him as if the crystal were a tumor within this cave and in need of being cut out.

He hastily snatches the crystal and heads out as quickly as he came. As soon as his fingers make contact with it, he feels the throbbing in his head starting to cease. Yet that relief is short-lived as he also recalls the time limit he’s been given and sprints out of the caverns.

When the rest of the Jedi Order see it, they are astounded by the crystal that Anakin brings back. A white crystal is something almost none of them have seen before, much less one with two colors. As they see the hints of red just below the surface, a few cannot help but look at it wearily, thinking it might be corrupted.

Only Yoda truly understands the meaning and explains that a white kyber crystal means it was bleached at some point, but later purified by someone. Some believe that this means the crystal might not be usable, especially with the hints of red, but as it is tested, they see the blade that emerges. It is pure white and shimmers in the dark.

Now, the question remains what should be done with the crystal and Anakin, given how unprecedented this development is.

Mace: So if this crystal truly is purified, that means it was possessed by a Sith at some point. That is a fact that we cannot ignore. It may be dangerous to give it to someone so young.

Yoda: Seen the blade you have, pale as snow the blade is. Not corrupted the crystal is. Perfectly safe it is for the boy.

Mace: But why would it choose him? If the Force led him to that crystal, then that means it wished for him to have it. What could the Force be saying?

Aayla: Perhaps it's a sign. The prophecy says that the Chosen One will bring balance to the Force. That crystal has both darkness and light within itself. Perhaps it is to show that there is indeed darkness and light within Anakin. It shows he is the one who will fulfill this prophecy.

Ki-Adi-Mundi: You imply that balance means accepting the darkness. But, I believe you are correct that this is a sign. If a white lightsaber means that the darkness has been purified, maybe that is what the crystal means. That Anakin is meant to purify it in the galaxy.

Mace: In which case, he must be trained to do just that.
