Description: Black and white footage. Guests dancing and celebrating the new year on Saturday, December 31, 1960 at the Zebra Room's New Year's Eve Dance. Governor James Howard Edmondson answers questions regarding General Washburn's projected highway program at a press conference. He discusses Oklahoma's need for a master road plan and the expected expenditures needed to support the highway program. Governor Edmondson hosts and welcomes guests to an event at the Governor's Mansion. Guests are seen inside and outside of the mansion. University of Oklahoma football coach, Bud Wilkinson, is seen unboarding an airplane. Wilkinson briefly discusses the University of Oklahoma and the NCA. Governor Edmondson is seen with other unidenitfied men, hauling a cart of boxes filled with petitions to the Secretary of State's office. Edmondson explains that filing the petitions at that particular time was key to emphasizing the importance of circulating and concentrating on the circulation of the other two proposals--the reapportionment and constitutional highway commission petitions. He calls on all Oklahomans who are upset with the current highway system and those in favor of fair and equal representation in the legislature to sign the petitions. Silent footage of an unidentified woman posting a sign stating that the "1960 Census Bureau is Coming" on an office door, as well as sorting through boxes of forms. Footage of Senator Robert Kennedy unboarding an airplane. He briefly discusses the level of support his brother, John F. Kennedy, had been receiving during his campaign, the upcoming primaries, "Kennedy Clubs," and Lyndon B. Johnson. Footage of Governor Edmondson and other unidentified men seated at a table during a press conference at the Oklahoma state capital. Governor Edmondson discusses why he disagrees with the Attorney General's - Mac Q. Williamson - implementation of the merit system law, which prohibited state employees from participating in any initiative petition campaign. Another man, Mr. Howell, also discusses the Attorney General's opinon in terms of whether or not it would hinder, help, or have any effect at all, as well as the constitutionality of the opinion. Governor Edmondson is seen holding a copy of the book, Immutable Images of Oklahoma. Written by James Neilson, Guy Fraser Harrison, Douglas Edwards, Governor J. Howard Edmondson, and Richard Rodgers, published by the Oklahoma Department of Commerce and Industry, Immutable Images of Oklahoma received a top award in the division for descriptive brochures by the American Industrial Development Council. Silent footage from the grand opening of Penn Square "open-air" mall on March 3, 1960. Footage includes images of the ribbon cutting ceremony. Silent footage of a police officer directing traffic at a snowy intersection. Footage of Lyndon B. Johnson, Senate Majority Leader, speaking to state newspaper publishers of the Oklahoma Press Association and greeting his supporters for Democratic presidential nomination on April 3, 1960. Footage of fans waiting for the arrival of a train carrying Elvis Presley. Elvis appears and signs autographs for his fans. Footage includes an interview with Elvis. Recently discharged from the army, he responds to questions about his army experiences and about his current relationship status. Footage of buildings, both business and residential, demolished by a tornado that swept through Caddo, Grady, Cleveland, and Seminole counties on April 28, 1960. Seminole county was reported to have received the worse blow, with fifty to seventy-five farm homes damaged. In addition to damaged buildings, this footage also includes images of disaster relief units, victims of the storm arriving at emergency shelters, and interviews with individuals who were affected by the tornado.
