ভারতের প্রাচীনকালে বিবাহ ও যৌনতার ইতিহাস কেমন ছিল তা নিয়ে কথা হয়েছে এর আগের পর্বে। ঋগ্বেদ থেকে অথর্ববেদ, আপস্তম্ভ ধর্মসূত্র থেকে নারদ-বশিষ্ঠ-পরাশর-যাজ্ঞবল্ক প্রমুখের স্মৃতিশাস্ত্রে, মনু সংহিতায় যেমন বিবাহবিচ্ছেদ ও নারী-পুরুষের পুনির্বিবাহ নিয়ে নানা বক্তব্য রয়েছে, তেমনই এই বিষয়ে নিয়ম-নির্দেশ রয়েছে চাণক্য তথা কৌটিল্যের অর্থশাস্ত্রেও। মহাভারতে জরৎকারু, নল-দময়ন্তী, শান্তনু-গঙ্গা, অর্জুন-উলুপী -ইত্যাদি কাহিনিতেও রয়েছে বিবাহবিচ্ছেদ ও পুনির্বিবাহ প্রসঙ্গ। এই পর্বে রইল প্রাচীন ভারতীয় সমাজে বিবাহবিচ্ছেদ, বিধবাবিবাহ ও পুনর্বিবাহের সেইসব গল্প।
