This presentation by Jessica Burghart (Prairie Band Potawatomi), PhD, was part of the 11th annual TCU Faculty Convening held May 20-21, 2025, in Minneapolis. Dr. Burghart is a business faculty member at Haskell Indian Nations University.
Description: Tribal colleges and universities have a dual mission to educate students who can contribute to the workforce and be good citizens, as well as to perpetuate Native cultures and languages and strengthen communities. In this way, TCUs and faculty directly support Tribal nation-building. This session will cover the economic development benefits of entrepreneurship, barriers that students and Tribal citizens may face when starting up a business, and solutions to cultivate a healthy Indigenous entrepreneurial ecosystem.
