Ever wonder how computers turn pictures of text into actual text? That’s optical character recognition, or OCR, and its optical character recognition algorithms and software that actually does the reading. Watch the video to find how OCR works.
Before optical character recognition software, paper documents had to be manually typed out for digital archiving and other purposes. This was tedious work, rife with errors and potential translation issues. Thanks to OCR, what took hours now takes seconds. Optical character recognition is now used to not only archive documents and open them up for editing and searching, it’s also used for sorting mail, reading license plates for toll collection, mobile check deposits, and making documents more accessible for the visually impaired.
Optical imaging recognition algorithms recognize characters in two primary ways, both identifying contrasting areas that indicate text.
