In this spur of the moment cellphone video, I, a nonculinary guy, attempt to make biblical pancakes know as Ashishot. Real recipe for Biblical Lentil Pancakes Ashishot from Dr. Tova Dickstein from Neot Kedumim Park in Israel. I did not follow it, just went by what I thought looked right. Why I made with lentils is below the recipe.
Ingredients
1 cup of lentil flour
1 ½ cups of water or milk
¼ teaspoon of salt
2 ½ tablespoons of honey
Cinnamon (optional)
Olive oil
Directions:
Slightly roast the flour in a dry pan
Mix all the ingredients (save for the oil) into an even, smooth batter
Heat a lightly oiled griddle or frying pan over a low to medium fire
Pour or scoop the batter onto the griddle, using approximately 1/8 to a 1/4 cup for each pancake
Flip the pancakes swiftly, as the burn quickly due to the honey inside
After the 2nd side has browned, quickly remove and place on a plate
For additional sweetness, you can sprinkle additional honey on the pancakes as they are served
And if you want to be really fancy – you can sprinkle on them cinnamon, a spice from the Far East that arrived in the Levant during the Iron Age!
Why lentils?
The word Ashisha, in Hebrew, is subject to much debate as to its translation. It can be translated as a pancake or as a jug/decanter of wine or grape juice. It really depends on context. It is found throughout the Bible. In 2nd Samuel 6:19 according to most of the Jewish commentators it is referring to a jug of wine. In the Song of Songs 2:5, it can be understood as a pancake of raisins or fine wheat flour, or again as jug/decanter of wine. Interestingly, the Septuagint translates Ashishot as perfumes. In the book of Hosea 3:1 it is referring to a jug of wine. Ashishot were under stood as being pancakes made of lentils and honey in the from the time of the Mishnah (circa 200 CE, see BT Nedarim mishnah 6). As this is the only definitive explanation of what Ashishot are, I have gone with this explanation. Dr. Dickstein goes with the Talmudic understanding as well.
