There are places on this earth where time seems to fold in on itself, where the boundaries between the present and the ancient past blur into something almost unrecognizable. Deep in the Shanxi Province of northern China, carved into the rust-colored cliffs of the Zhongnan Mountains, exists a network of caves that have served as refuges for those seeking escape from the world for more than fifteen hundred years. These are not the tourist-friendly grottos with neon lighting and guided tours. These are raw, cold hollows in the mountainside, some barely large enough to lie down in, others opening into chambers where the echo of a single breath can sound like the whisper of ghosts. The air inside carries the mineral scent of stone that has never known sunlight, mixed with the faint, earthy smell of incense burned by generations of hermits who believed that suffering in solitude was the only path to enlightenment. It was into one of these caves, in the autumn of 1990, that a man named Yun Feng walked with nothing but a bamboo mat, a clay water jug, and a determination to sever every thread that connected him to the life he had known.
