The station master at Whitefish, Montana, recorded the arrival of the 4:17 westbound on March 9th, 1904, as routine. Twenty-three passengers disembarked. One of them was Thomas Grier.
He stepped onto the platform with no luggage. His coat was torn at the shoulder. His boots were caked with something the station master would later describe, with careful neutrality, as "forest matter." When asked if he required assistance, Grier shook his head. When asked where he'd come from, he said nothing at all.
