The train from Duluth arrived at Chicago's Union Station on the morning of November 14th, 1907, forty-three minutes behind schedule. Among the passengers who disembarked was a man named Samuel Garrett, age thirty-one, employed until recently as a surveyor for the Northern Timber & Land Company. He carried no luggage. His coat was torn at the left shoulder. When a porter asked if he required assistance, Garrett looked at him for several seconds before walking past without answering.
The company had sent a representative to meet him. This man, whose name appears in the records as J.W. Hollis, later testified that Garrett's appearance was "gaunt but not starved, composed but not calm." Hollis attempted to shake his hand. Garrett did not extend his own. They stood on the platform while other passengers moved around them like water around stone.
