The train pulled into Grand Central Terminal on the morning of November 14th, 1903, forty minutes past schedule. Among the passengers who descended onto the platform was a man named Samuel Horace Venner, age thirty-two, whose appearance would be described in three separate witness statements with remarkable consistency: gaunt, clean-shaven where he had previously worn a beard, and carrying only a canvas rucksack that appeared nearly empty.
