Our society lives in an atmosphere of fear that feeds upon hearsay evidence lacking rigorous documentation. This applies to society's general lack of understanding of nuclear energy, vaccinations, GM foods and climate change.
One of the most pervasive distortions of fact and consequent safety regulations in the nuclear industry is based upon the Linear No-Threshold Theory (LNT), a worn-out idea that should have been discarded long ago. Concepts of radiation hormesis, radiation-induced cancer and radiation in the treatment of cancer are briefly reviewed.
