How a Neapolitan Pizzeria is striving for a Michelin Star | Stella (Documentary, 2021)

Ciro Oliva is a young, highly spirited and proud chef in Naples. His pizza restaurant Concettina ai Tre Santi is named after his great-grandmother and is located in Sanita, one of the poorest but most colorful neighborhoods of the historic city. At the tender age of 18, Ciro took over the family restaurant and he elevated the quotidian neighborhood pizzeria to a restaurant with a sommelier, a tasting menu, new and inventive pizza dishes and a permanent queue in front of the restaurant.

‘Pizza means Soul’, an amiable Ciro Oliva strongly proclaims in Stella, a mouthwatering feel good film following the energetic, always good-natured Neapolitan pizzaiolo. He passionately aims to run the first ever pizza restaurant awarded with a prestigious Michelin Star, as it would greatly benefit Sanita and the city. The Michelin Guide is one of the most influential, notoriously secretive and critical institutions in gastronomy and Ciro’s quest to elevate his restaurant to star level is far from easy. Not only other famous chefs, experts, journalists corroborate this but also Gwendal Poullennec, the International Director of the Michelin Guide in a rare interview. By focusing on using the best local ingredients and improving quality of service and ambiance, Ciro and his crew commit to a culinary experience not typically associated with pizza or with his neighborhood.

Not only does Stella show that the art of making pizza is a highly cinematic craft but one also gets immersed in the splendor and texture of Naples. As Michelin celebrates the addition of 35 new Stars to the 2022 Guide for Italy, can a young chef manage the attention that comes with earning a landmark Michelin Star?
