History and Etymology

Originally a small agricultural town, Faisalabad was founded in 1890 by the British colonial government and was named Lyallpur in honor of Sir James Broadwood Lyall, the Lieutenant Governor of the Punjab. The city was meticulously planned, with its center designed to replicate the Union Jack flag. Eight roads radiate from a central Clock Tower, each leading to a different market (bazaar). After Pakistan's independence in 1947, the city's population grew rapidly as Muslim immigrants from East Punjab settled there. It was renamed Faisalabad in 1979 to honor King Faisal of Saudi Arabia.
