Here is a list of the ingredients in a bar of soap in the supermarket. This soap is marketed to contain natural ingredients and to be kind to the skin. The ingredients are - Sodium Lauroyl Isethionate, Stearic Acid, Sodium Stearate, Sodium Palmate, Aqua, Sodium isethionate, Lauric Acid, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Parfum, Sodium Palm Kernelate, Sodium Chloride, Glycerin, Tetrasodium Etidronate, Tetrasodium EDTA, Zinc Oxide, Alpha-Isomethyl Ionone, Citronellol, Coumarin, Hexyl Cinnamal, Limonene, Linalool, CI 77891. The last ingredient is Titanium Dioxide. Altogether that is 22 ingredients (TWENTY TWO) - and I don't have time to look up all of them to determine if they are safe. My soap has FOUR ingredients! The recipe is as follows -
450 mls Rainwater or Filtered Water
172g Caustic Soda - to be added to water slowly and carefully
1000g of Olive oil which can include infused oil of your choice
250g Coconut oil
Optional - Small handful of oatflakes/1 tsp salt/essential oils

Gently heat the oils to 50 degrees C after adding the caustic soda to the water and stirring to help the caustic soda to dissolve. When both parts are at the same temperature, give or take, around 50C, add the water component to the oil component and mix with a stick blender, slowly and gently. After a few minutes the mixture will begin to thicken and will become like a thick batter or custard. Add the oatflakes and salt at this point and any essential oils you want to include. Pour into your moulds and cover with baking paper and wrap in a double folded towel for a minimum of 24 hours. After 24 hours, remove the soap from the moulds and cut into slices. Leave to mature and harden for six weeks before use.
