Description
It’s the morning of 6th October, and after a refreshing night at Summit Namnang Hotel, Gangtok, we started our journey to Lachung — one of the most scenic mountain villages in North Sikkim. We began around 9:30 AM, right after breakfast, fully geared up for a long and thrilling Himalayan drive.”
As we exited Gangtok, the city roads soon gave way to narrow mountain lanes surrounded by pine forests and steep valleys. The air became cooler, and the adventure had officially begun.”
we passed Kabi Lungchok, a small but significant site in Sikkim’s history where the Bhutia and Lepcha tribes signed the Treaty of Brotherhood centuries ago. A short detour brings you to the monument built to commemorate this event.”
As we continued, the road followed the course of the Teesta River, with multiple hanging bridges connecting the valleys.
At around Sankalan Check Post, our North Sikkim permits were verified — a must for anyone traveling beyond Mangan.
These army and police posts are well-organized and essential for traveler safety.”
After crossing Phensang, the real challenge began. The roads turned narrow, uneven, and broken in many stretches due to recent rain and landslides from early October.
In several areas, the mountain sides had partially slipped, and BRO (Border Roads Organisation) crews were working tirelessly to clear debris.
Some sections were single-lane with no barriers on one side — just the deep valley and roaring Teesta River below.”
“At around 12:00 noon, we reached Mangan, the headquarters of North Sikkim. This is the last big town before the high mountains.
We took a short break for tea and snacks — a small stall offered Maggi, momos, and hot tea — the perfect mountain combo!
Beyond Mangan, mobile networks fade, and only BSNL works intermittently.”
After Singhik, we entered some of the toughest road sections of the entire trip.
There were multiple landslide-prone stretches with loose gravel, temporary detours, and BRO machinery clearing the road.
In certain places, streams flowed right across the road, forcing vehicles to slow down and cross carefully.
Our driver handled the Innova brilliantly — but you must have an experienced local driver here.”
“By 2:30 PM, we reached Chungthang, a small but historically important town at the confluence of the Lachen and Lachung Rivers.
A small Gurudwara maintained by the Indian Army stands here, along with a few army posts.
From this point, the road splits — one towards Lachen and the other towards Lachung. We took the left turn towards Lachung.”
“The final 25 km stretch from Chungthang to Lachung took almost 1.5 hours. The road remained narrow and broken, with several wooden and iron bridges across deep valleys.
However, this section was also the most beautiful — with continuous waterfalls, alpine forests, and vibrant prayer flags lining the roadside.”
“At exactly 4 PM, we reached Lachung, a serene mountain village at around 9,000 feet elevation.
Surrounded by snow-capped peaks and icy streams, Lachung is famous for its apple orchards, wooden houses, and warm hospitality of the locals.
As the sun dipped behind the mountains, the temperature dropped quickly — a perfect end to a challenging yet breathtaking drive.”
“This 6th October road trip from Gangtok to Lachung was a true Himalayan adventure — full of beauty, challenges, and unforgettable views.
From broken roads and army check posts to hanging bridges and cloud-covered peaks — every kilometer had its own story.
Tomorrow, we continue our journey to Yumthang Valley, the ‘Valley of Flowers.’ Stay tuned for the next episode!”
