The Southern region of British Railways opted for diesel electric transmission for their diesel multiple units.
Built at Eastleigh between 1957 and 1962 these units did sterling work all around the Southern right up to 2003/05 when they were finally withdrawn.
They soon gained the nickname ‘Thumpers’ due to their characteristic exhaust beat.
They were soon given a centre coach and became 3H.
This model only available new from Kernow Model Rail Centre arrived with me Christmas 2014 and can be seen here running with my Brighton Bell and green class 73 and class 35.
The video includes original recordings © I made back in the 80s and early 90s when I was lucky enough to work on these brave little units.
Enjoy the video, my first for 2015.
