“They can’t track it if I’m gone. The network dies with me. That’s why I called you. Not because I needed rescue. Because you’re the only one who’d finish it clean.”
The storm broke overhead, wind whipping dust through the courtyard. Kowalsski’s heart cracked open, quiet and sharp. “You’re asking me to kill you.”
“I’m asking you to choose,” he said softly. “Do what the system won’t. End what it started.”
Lightning tore across the horizon. For a moment, she saw him the way he used to be—laughing on a training field, hand steady on her shoulder after a bad op, alive. Then the wind changed, and he was just a silhouette against gray.
She raised the rifle. Her hands didn’t shake. But her vision blurred.
“Tell me one thing,” she whispered. “Did they ever stop controlling you?”
He smiled one last time. “They’re listening now. Make it count.”
And then he stepped closer, until the barrel nearly touched his chest.
Until there was no more distance between what he’d been and what he’d become.
She pulled the trigger.
The sound was small — smaller than thunder, smaller than loss. He fell like a curtain closing.
For a long time, she didn’t move. The wind swirled around her boots, carrying dust and memory into the air. She holstered her weapon and knelt beside him. His eyes were open, fixed on the sky. In death, he looked almost human again.
Sullivan’s voice came faint through static. “Alex. Report.”
She keyed the comm. Her voice was low, steady. “Target neutralized. Containment achieved.”
A pause. “Was it him?”
She looked at the face she’d once trusted more than her own instincts. “It was what was left of him.”
Silence on the line. Then, softly: “Copy. We’ll bring you home.”
But she didn’t move yet. She reached into his jacket and found something small — a folded scrap of paper, worn, damp with sweat. Inside, in Torres’s sharp handwriting, were four words:
Never let them finish.
She closed it in her fist. The storm tore at the note, but she held on until it stilled, until she could breathe again.
Hours later, back at base, she sat in a dim hangar beside Sullivan. The file transfer lights blinked softly from the secured terminal—Vetrov’s drive, now decrypted. On the monitor: schematics, algorithms, gene-sequencing data, neural override patterns. The architecture of controlled evolution.
Sullivan’s face was gray with exhaustion. “We can bury it,” he said. “Erase the servers, burn the backups. Pretend it never happened.”
She shook her head slowly. “That’s what they always do. Bury the truth, grow something worse.”
“Then what?”
Her voice was soft, but resolute. “We tell it. Every detail. Every scar. Let the world see what silence builds.”
Sullivan looked at her for a long time, the kind of look only old soldiers share when they realize the war they fought was just one chapter in a longer story. “You’ll never serve again,” he said quietly.
She smiled faintly. “Maybe I finally understand what service means.”
He nodded once. “You’re still one of mine.”
She rose, the drive in her hand. Outside, the morning light cut through the hangar doors, slicing gold across steel. For a moment, it felt like warmth, not fire.
As she walked into the sun, the wind carried faint echoes of the voices she’d buried — Michael, Torres, all the ghosts who had kept her alive long enough to change the ending.
Maybe the world wouldn’t understand what she’d done. Maybe it never would. But some truths didn’t need applause — just courage.
She stopped at the edge of the tarmac, looking toward the open horizon. The note still rested in her hand, words fading under the wind’s touch. She whispered them once more, to no one and to everyone:
“Never let them finish.”
Then she turned, shoulders squared, and walked away.
Because sometimes, dignity doesn’t speak.
It simply acts.
