India after Independence [Lec 09] lecture of 30 October 2014, UCLA Fall 2014 course. The lecture is at first a continuation of the previous one, with a discussion of some aspects of social development and some puzzles: why has the female-male ratio deteriorated even though female literacy has increased? The failure of the liberal imagination in this respect is important. This lecture then looks at the ameliorative measures undertaken by the state and/or recognized by the Constitution, including NREGA, the Right to Education Act (2005), the implementation of mid-day school meals programs, etc. But this is preceded by a discussion of some land reform measures in India.
In the second half of the lecture today, I begin to discuss politics in India, commencing with "domestic politics". The problem of secessionism in India and the question of the 'integration' of Indian states into the Union of India. Brief description of the problem of Hyderabad, 1948-48. Linguistic reorganization of Indian states. Electoral reforms and universal franchise; centre-state relations. Homogenization in the US. Stratification and hierarchy in India.
