India after Independence [Lec 10] Lecture of 4 November 2014, UCLA Fall 2014 course. Some thoughts on the caste system; pollution and contamination; case of Taco Bell. Distinction between the textbook view of caste and what happens on the ground. The origins of the Dalits; their relation to the Shudras. The policy of reservations for Dalits. Question of minorities in India and secessionist problems; the dispute over Kashmir; the Red or Maoist belt in India; problems in integrating the North-east. How does a country secure its borders? Oppression of the state; the use of AFSPA (Armed Forces Special Powers Act). LIttle insurrections in India. In the concluding 15 minutes, I look at India's relations with neighboring states. India-Pakistan wars, especially in 1971 and the creation of Bangladesh.
