The New York Shaving Company is a beautiful barbershop in Freehold, New Jersey, housed in a gorgeous building from the late 1800s. It’s a place full of character - original ceiling tiles, wall tiles, and beautifully worn wooden floors ✨ Interestingly, the building used to be a factory where they made metal files (horse rasps) for shaping horse hooves 🐎

The shop is owned by John Scala, a 1st generation Italian who grew up in New York City.
in 2008, John opened a barbershop in Little Italy where he and his wife, Kim, also began making products. John’s focus was on creating an old-fashioned barbershop experience combining high-quality services with high-quality locally crafted products 💈

For the initial investment to open his shop, John saved and borrowed money. He got a space but during the renovation, they hit a major roadblock - running out of money... So his wife stepped in with a solution. She offered to sell her princess cut diamond engagement ring which is what allowed them to keep going and open the shop 💍✨

Starting out with the products, John remembers Kim mixing shave creams in their Brooklyn apartment. They outgrew their space as their little bedroom became filled with buckets of shaving cream 🪣

In 2014, the family made the move to Freehold, NJ and they got the current space in 2015 to originally put together their products. Up until 2020, John was commuting 2 hours each way to Manhattan to their barbershop. Kim suggested opening a barbershop in Freehold, which was such a blessing! Now John gets to spend more time with his family, see his kids throughout the day, eat dinner together, and enjoy a much shorter commute to the shop - just under 10 minutes ❤️

In the works are their plans to open an adjoining cafe next to the barbershop ☕️
