Hi, I’m James, and welcome to Day 13 of the 31 Day Beginner Guitar Course.

Hopefully Whiskey in the Jar gave your chord changes a good workout. Keep practicing moving two fingers at the same time — that skill will keep paying off.

Today we’re taking on the main Californication riff by Red Hot Chili Peppers — probably the toughest riff so far — and adding a new chord to your toolkit: D minor.

This lesson is all about coordination, accuracy, and control.

In Day 13, you’ll learn:
• The main Californication riff
• How to bring the thumb down for better control
• How to handle string skipping
• When to let notes ring
• How the power chord shape from Iron Man fits into this song
• The D minor chord
• How to change smoothly between F and D minor, and G and D minor
• How to play the song up to the chorus (the rest of the song follows the same pattern, minus the solo)

Take this one slow. This riff is about precision, relaxed hands, and clean movement, not speed. Treat it like a technical exercise and you’ll feel your playing jump up a level.
