Hi, I’m James, and welcome to Day 25 of the 31 Day Beginner Guitar Course.

I hope you’re not sick of power chords yet — we’ve been really focusing on them lately, and for good reason. They’re the backbone of so much rock music.

Today we’re using one of the most famous riffs of all time: Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana. This song is perfect for learning power chords with muting to get that tight, punchy sound.

We’ll also reference the gallop-style rhythm from Sunshine of Your Love to help you lock into the feel.

In Day 25, you’ll learn:
• The power chord shapes used in the song
• How to use muting for a tight, controlled sound
• The verse and pre-chorus parts
• The bridge section (the hardest part of the song)
• How to switch between sections smoothly
• How to play through the song

We’ll start by getting the power chord shapes and muting technique right, then learn the verse and pre-chorus, then the bridge, and finally play the whole song together.

Take this one slowly and focus on clean muting and solid timing. This riff only sounds right when it’s tight and controlled.
