Last week, the Northern Lights appeared above the Netherlands — a rare and almost unreal sight in our skies. But what moved me most was not only the beauty itself. It was what it did to us. For a brief moment, the noise faded. People looked up. Together. Strangers united by wonder. By beauty. In a world that feels increasingly loud, divided, and driven by power and fear, that moment felt precious. This piece grew out of that feeling.

It is written in D major, with a darker, more introspective middle section in B minor, flowing gently like the movement of the aurora itself. The 6/8 rhythm has a rocking motion — calm, almost breathing — which returns in different forms throughout the piece. In the middle section, the music breaks away from that motion, introducing more unexpected and searching harmonies, before finding its way back again.

The contrast between light and darkness is intentional: bright, singing lines in the right hand against a deep, shadowed accompaniment in the left — like the aurora against the night sky.

I am giving this piece away for free until Easter because, honestly, I am tired of the politics of our time. Tired of force, of shouting, of division. I believe we need to share beauty — freely and without conditions — as a quiet but powerful reminder of what connects us.
