As today is the last Sunday of the Church Year, also known as Eternity Sunday or Sunday of the Dead, we have a contemplative piece of music. This is the Lübeck master's setting of the chorale that starts with "Durch Adams Fall ist ganz verderbt menschlich Natur und Wesen" (Through Adam’s fall human nature and character is completely corrupted). This Lutheran chorale from 1524 describes the human suffering as a result of Adam's sin fall in Paradise. The chorale melody represents the resulting sadness, and the composer's version stresses this even more. Buxtehude adheres to his often used approach of ornamenting the hymn melody in the soprano, but he also includes other motifs to highlight the chorale sentiment: a falling fifth interval in the pedal to symbolize Adam's fall, and a chromatic downward movement in the pedal also to indicate the lamenting context. JS Bach quite likely used this work as model for his own version from the Orgelbüchlein, BWV 637, in which falling sevenths (!) are presented in the pedal and strong chromatic harmonies are used. Instrument: Johannus Monarke "Breughel".
