Oregon Nurses Association raises alarm over ICE practices at Legacy Emanuel Medical Center

The Oregon Nurses Association (ONA) is speaking out after addressing a letter to the President of Legacy Emanuel Medical Center. According to the letter, nurses who work in the hospital say they are concerned about hospital policies when it comes to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) being on the property.

The letter claims the hospital "may be failing to adhere to its HIPAA obligations and its own policies." Spokesperson for ONA, Peter Starzynski, told KATU that because of this, patients are being put at risk.

"Legacy is not treating ICE the same way they are treating other law enforcement or what is consistent with their policies," Starzynski said during an interview with KATU News. "We believe, and our members believe, that ICE needs to be held accountable when they bring detainees into Legacy hospitals."

According to Starzynski, nurses have been reporting ICE officials bringing detained people in for medical treatment. "Most law enforcement, if it's PPD or others, when they enter a hospital, have their badges and identification clearly visible for everybody to see who they are. That has not been the case with ICE. It's been hard to sometimes distinguish ICE from other folks."
