In today’s video, we explore a dire warning from the United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment and Health (UNU-INWEH), which has declared that the world is rapidly approaching a state of "water bankruptcy." This alarming development is the result of decades of overuse, pollution, and environmental destruction, pushing many of the world’s water systems past a point of recovery.
What is 'Water Bankruptcy'?
Water bankruptcy is a new term proposed to describe the condition where long-term water consumption has surpassed the ability of natural systems to replenish water resources. The consequences are severe and include the shrinking of large lakes, rivers failing to reach the sea for parts of the year, and significant groundwater depletion.
