This week we have waltzes by Juan d’Arienzo, who was born in Buenos Aires in 1900.
Now there are waltzes and waltzes… with Canaro you sometimes feel like your in Vienna, rather than Latin America, and waltzes by Caló & Demare for instance can be very romantic. Not Juan d’Arienzo. His type of waltz is the ‘Vals criollo’. And just like with his tangos, they are energetic and punchy.
The songs in this tanda are all from the 1930s and sung by Alberto Echagüe. Born in Rosario, in 1909. Echagüe was d’Arienzo’s most emblematic singer. He performed with him from September 1937 till the end of ’39. Then he left, but Echagüe returned in 1944.
The tanda starts with ‘Cabeza de novia’, music written by Anselmo Aieta, and lyrics by Nolo López. A good old-fashioned vals criollo from 1938, and easy to dance to.
Quite naturally followed by a waltz that dates back to 1919: ‘Ay, Aurora’. Music by Carlos Gardel & José Razzano and lyrics presumably by Pedro Numa Córdoba. Recorded by d’Arienzo and Echagüe in 1939. And beware, these waltzes sound happy enough, but both share lyrics about a love-gone-wrong.
The third track opens a bit differently. With ‘En tu corazón’, the violins join in, in the intro. And although the music seems simple enough, there are a bit more layers to this waltz than usual. Not so strange, since the music was composed by Horacio Salgán. With lyrics by Carmelo Volpe.
Especially the piano fills and countermelodies played by Juan Polito are really nice.
The final waltz of the tanda is ‘Castigo’, from 1939. Music written by d’Arienzo’s pianist at the time, Juan Polito, and lyrics by Luis Rubistein. A highly energetic waltz: it’s like d’Arienzo on speed, while Polito is banging the piano.
So that’s the waltz tanda of this week by d’Arienzo & Echagüe:
1. Cabeza de novia 1938
2. Ay, Aurora 1939
3. En tu corazón 1938
4. Castigo 1939
Enjoy!
