Bacterial conjugation is a process of genetic transfer between bacterial cells that requires direct contact between the cell. Conjugation occurs between the same species or different species of cells.
For conjugation, a circular plasmid called F factor is required. F stands for fertility factor. Strains of bacteria containing F factors are called F+ cells and those without it are called F- cells.
F+ cells are the donor cells which produces a structure called pilus to connect with another recipient cell (F-). Pili is a projection forming cytoplasmic bridge that initiates contact with a recipient cell and allows the F DNA to pass through a pore into the recipient cell. One strand of the ds F DNA is transferred and then DNA replication restores the complementary strand in both the donor and recipient cells.
