"Limerence" is a common struggle for people who were emotionally neglected as children. It involves magicalizing and spiritualizing relationships that are not reciprocal or don't exist, and one form of it is a belief in "twin flames" -- the idea that someone who is only marginally in your life but not your partner and/or not in love with you is "really" the other half of your soul. It's a belief that tends to keep people alone and unable to connect romantically with available people. Here's how trauma plays into the development of this belief.
