BEACH OF PEDRÓGÃO

Pedrógão is a place belonging to the parish of Coimbrão, municipality of Leiria. It is the only beach and seaside resort in the municipality of Leiria. It gives its name to the National Forest of Pedrógão, within which it is inserted.
With a 1400-meter sandy beach, it owes its name to the huge rocky outcrop that intersects the extensive sand, south of the place, which now functions as a spur. It was to this rocky outcrop that the necessary rock for the construction of the jetties at the mouth of Lis was removed. We can divide the beaches in Pedrógão Norte (where the houses are) and Pedrógão Sul - the sand in the north area is much bigger (sometimes the beach of Pedrógão Sul even disappears due to the advance of the sea.
The extensive and thin sandy beach is flanked by extensive dunes vegetated by sea thistle, which are in an advanced state of destruction due to human occupation and trampling by tourists, making its conservation very important. Nowadays there has been an erosive retreat from the sand, mainly due to the construction of the jetties at the mouth of the Mondego.

Pedrógão é um lugar pertencente à freguesia de Coimbrão, concelho de Leiria. É a única estância balnear do concelho de Leiria. Dá o seu nome à Mata Nacional de Pedrógão, na qual se insere.
Com um areal de 1400 metros, deve o seu nome ao enorme afloramento rochoso que intersecta o extenso areal, a sul do local, que funciona agora como esporão. Foi deste afloramento rochoso que foi retirada a rocha necessária para a construção dos molhes da foz do Lis. Podemos dividir as praias em Pedrógão Norte (onde se encontram as casas) e Pedrógão Sul - o areal na zona norte é muito maior (por vezes a praia de Pedrógão Sul chega mesmo a desaparecer devido ao avanço do mar).
O extenso e fino areal é ladeado por extensas dunas vegetadas por cardo-marítimo, que se encontram em avançado estado de destruição devido à ocupação humana e ao pisoteio turístico, tornando a sua conservação muito importante.
