NC500 Road Trip – Day 5 | Tain to John O’Groats | Rain, Wind & Coastal Stops

Day 5 of our NC500 adventure took us from Tain all the way to John O’Groats, and Scotland definitely reminded us who’s in charge. The weather was dark, wet, and windy for most of the day, with steady rain and occasional bursts of classic Scottish mist blowing across the road. Visibility wasn’t always great, but that only added to the moody atmosphere of the Highlands.

Our first stop was Dornoch Beach, where the dramatic skies and rough conditions gave the coastline a completely different feel. From there we continued on to Embo Beach, still battling the elements as the wind picked up and the rain showed no signs of easing.

Next up was the iconic Dunrobin Castle. Even under grey skies, it’s an impressive sight and a must-see stop on this stretch of the NC500. After Dunrobin, we made a quick stop at Big Burn Falls, enjoying a short walk down to the waterfall, which was flowing strongly thanks to all the rain.

By this point, a warm drink was well overdue, so we headed to Brora for an ice cream and coffee stop at Capaldi’s of Brora – the famous big pink shop. A perfect pick-me-up on a cold, wet Highland day and a definite highlight of the drive.

We then continued on to Dunbeath Harbour, soaking up the rugged coastal scenery as daylight began to fade fast. With the light disappearing and the weather still against us, we decided to drive straight through to John O’Groats.

We finished the day settling into our fantastic sea-view penthouse apartment which is part of the iconic colourful buildings on the cliff edge at John O’GROATS booked with Together Travel – the perfect place to rest, relax, and listen to the waves after a long day on the road.

Despite the challenging weather, Day 5 was packed with memorable stops, dramatic scenery, and proper NC500 conditions. Thanks for joining us on another day of the journey.
