Washington County has purchased two properties to open new shelters in Portland’s suburbs, but not everyone is happy, especially neighbors.
The county plans to put a safe rest village near the corner of Tualatin Valley Highway and 209th Avenue in Aloha, just across a new development called Reeds Crossing, which is considered to be prime real estate in Beaverton.
During a board of commissioner's meeting on Tuesday, the county's housing department announced the plan to build 60 tiny homes at the site.
“We are tremendously excited to be partnering with Open Door Housing Works. They are a really experienced pod shelter provider,” Emily Roots, public relations supervisor for the Washington County Department of Housing Services, told the commission.
The county also plans to convert a Beaverton hotel into a recovery outreach center, which would serve up to 85 people.
Both sites would help people get into housing and employment services.
