After a series of very unnerving hot drives, I decided to dive in and determine the actual cause of the wild temperature fluctuations. I have an oversized Howe radiator and less than 10,000 miles on the vehicle and was perplexed by what seemed like random fits of overheating. In the video, I evaluate the best replacement thermostat and demonstrate the process to determine if your replacement is the best it can be. In the end, I find that the factory thermostat spring has walked clockwise and the lower coil has popped out of the seat, causing the spring to put uneven load on the thermostat mechanism. This uneven load caused the thermostat to bind and created an uneven and sluggish opening and closing event. This resulted in the engine temperature having very large swings in magnitude. Do NOT miss the most important point that begins at 16:40 and clarifies why a quickly-reacting thermostat is so important for our little cars.
