WORLDS RECAP. PASSING THE SPIDER LASSO!

After watching this year’s IBJJF World Championships, one of the most prevalent challenges many competitors faced was passing the spider lasso guard. Passing the spider lasso can be a very difficult feat in that many competitors use this guard to slow down the fight, focusing mainly on their ability to prevent the top player’s from passing versus off-balancing and attacking. The bottom player’s ability to hold and cause a stale mate is what gives this guard strength. Therefore when passing the spider lasso, the top player must focus on creating a position that will isolate the bottom player’s hips and force them to open up rather than relying on explosive grip breaking and dynamic outside passing. In this video, we discuss how competitors utilize the guard for strategy, as well as how the top player can approach passing the guard effectively.
