匹? 頭? 羽? Japanese Counters for Animals Made Easy!
In Japanese, the way you count animals changes depending on things like their size or whether they're pets, farm animals, or wild animals.
We use 匹 [hiki/biki/piki] when counting small animals that people commonly interact with, such as pets or small creatures: cats, dogs, mice, rabbits, turtles, goats, piglets, fish, and insects.
Large animals such as domesticated horses, cattle, and pigs, as well as wild animals like deer, lions, elephants, giraffes, and whales, are counted using the counter 頭 [tou]. Even small animals are counted this way if they are used for industrial purposes.
We use the counter 羽 [wa] when counting birds. The kanji 羽 means bird's feathers or wings. You might’ve heard that rabbits can be counted with 羽, but that’s usually only when they’re used for food. When they’re alive, we count them with 匹 [hiki].
When counting aquatic animals with tails that are used as food, such as fish, eels, and shrimp, the counter 尾 [bi] is used. For fish that are caught or displayed at the supermarket, 尾 is used. However, when counting live fish in the sea or in an aquarium, 匹 is used instead.
