I want to explain directly to Australians why I took the stand I did over Labor’s rushed omnibus legislation.
Over the past few days, we in the National Party worked hard to try to improve what was, frankly, a shambolic bill dealing with hate speech and gun laws. We worked with our Coalition colleagues and lawyers to draft amendments that would make the legislation better. But the Albanese Government guillotined debate, shut down proper scrutiny, and rammed this bill through Parliament for political purposes.
There was no genuine inquiry. There was no proper time for debate. And there was no Joint Party Room decision before our senators were forced into an impossible position.
With tears in my eyes, I chose to stand with my Senate colleagues and my party room. They did not go rogue — they acted on behalf of the Nationals, and I am proud of them for standing their ground.
This interview is about more than one bill. It’s about process, leadership, and whether Australians can still trust their Parliament to protect democracy, freedom, and the values we hold dear.
Australians deserve better than legislation rushed through for political point-scoring.
