On ABC News, I explain why I resigned from the shadow ministry and why The Nationals could not support Labor’s rushed hate speech legislation.
Today should first and foremost be about mourning the horrific Bondi terror attack and standing with Jewish Australians. But Australians also deserve honesty about what happened in Parliament. These laws were rushed, debate was shut down, and proper scrutiny was ignored. I am not convinced this legislation will make Australians safer — and neither is my party room.
Principle matters more than position. Laws that affect freedom, social cohesion and democracy must be done properly, not rammed through for political convenience.
We will always stand with our communities and for better lawmaking.
