Early Autumn Melbourne - Min Temp 21.2 Max Temp 36.9 Rain 0 mm
Hey, good day everybody! It's nice and hot here today in Melbourne. Yesterday it was over 30°C, and it’s the same today and tomorrow. So, there’s plenty of watering to do in the garden. In today's video, I'll be collecting tomatoes and removing yellow leaves from the tomato plants. I'll also be collecting some vegetables: kale, carrots, swedes, and basil. Let's get started with the tomatoes!
Step-by-Step Guide:
Collecting Tomatoes:
I’ve started collecting some tomatoes already—some are green, some are red.
I’m collecting the green ones to avoid insects eating them. Green tomatoes will ripen on a windowsill.
Leave the tops on the tomatoes so they can continue ripening.
Some tomatoes have rot or disease, and they're smaller than expected, but this heirloom variety looks healthy overall.
Removing Yellow Leaves:
Yellow leaves don’t serve a purpose and should be removed.
Using a tool, carefully cut away the yellow or dry leaves.
This helps the plant focus on healthy growth and fruit production.
Harvesting Vegetables:
Basil: It’s bolting, but I’ve collected seeds recently. The leaves are still edible and will be used soon.
Swedes: Some have powdery mildew due to being planted too close together. Give swedes plenty of space to avoid this issue.
Kale: Preparing a salad for dinner with friends, and the kale looks healthy despite some pest damage. Harvest from the bottom up to promote new growth.
Carrots: Harvesting those that are big enough. Check the thickness by digging around them with your finger. Avoid letting them grow too large.
Harvesting Basil for Pesto:
I love making pesto with basil, cheese, and pine nuts. If you haven’t watched my pesto video, check it out for a great recipe.
Harvest the tops of the basil plants to prevent bolting and encourage side growth.
Different varieties of basil add unique flavors to the pesto.
