The recent government directive for mobile manufacturers to pre-install the Sanchar Saathi app has caused a major political row, with the issue being raised in Parliament. The Opposition alleges it is a "snooping app" that violates the right to privacy, while the government maintains it is an optional cybersecurity tool to combat fraud. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) issued directions mandating that the Sanchar Saathi app be pre-installed on all mobile handsets manufactured or imported for use in India. The order initially suggested the app's functionalities should not be disabled or restricted. Opposition parties, especially the Congress, have strongly criticized the move, calling it "unconstitutional" and a "dictatorial" attempt at mass surveillance. Leaders like Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Mallikarjun Kharge have termed it a "snooping app" and an attack on citizens' privacy.
Government Defense: Union Minister for Communications, Jyotiraditya Scindia, and BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra have defended the app, asserting it is designed solely for user protection against fraud, not surveillance. They highlighted the app's success in tracking stolen phones and disconnecting fraudulent connections. Amid the backlash, Minister Scindia clarified that the app is optional and can be deleted by users, emphasizing that it remains dormant unless activated. The issue caused a furor in Parliament, with the Opposition demanding a discussion on the matter during the Winter Session. Reports indicate that mobile manufacturers, including Apple, were not consulted before the order and some plan to resist the mandatory pre-installation directive, citing privacy and security concerns. The Sanchar Saathi portal and app offer features like tracking stolen phones, verifying genuine IMEIs, and reporting fraud. More information is available on the official Sanchar Saathi portal which describes itself as a citizen-centric initiative to empower mobile subscribers and strengthen security.
