Jeanne the Slave: America’s Most Dangerous Woman Who Seduced and Ruined Three Dynasties

Описание:

On a gray March morning in 1764, the merchant vessel Providence cut through Charleston Harbor's choppy waters. Captain Rousso gripped the ship's rail, watching the city's church spires rise against the dawn sky like pointing fingers. In his seventeen voyages from Santo Domingo, he'd never felt this uneasy about cargo.
Below deck, chained in the hold, was a woman who hadn't uttered a single word during the three-week crossing. No tears. No pleading. Just an unsettling presence that made his crew avoid going below. Two days ago, his quartermaster had pulled him aside, voice shaking: "Sir, the men refuse to go down there anymore. They claim she watches them. Even in her sleep, they swear those eyes follow every movement."
Rousso had backhanded the man for superstitious nonsense. But privately? He felt it too. That strange heaviness in the air around her, like the pressure building before a lightning strike.

Charleston spread before them—magnificent and grotesque in equal measure. White mansions gleamed along the Battery, monuments built on rice and human misery. The harbor reeked of salt, tar, and the particular stench of auction day. Enslaved people hauled cargo while merchants recorded their profits in leather-bound ledgers. This was the wealthiest port in the American colonies, processing more enslaved Africans than anywhere north of Havana.
Here, human beings were inventory. Here, suffering had a price tag.
And here, Jean would unleash a reckoning that would echo for generations.
The Delacroix mansion stood at 47 East Battery Street—three stories of Charleston brick and marble, with gardens cascading down to the seawall where waves crashed against old Charleston's foundations. From a third-floor window, Madame Celeste Delacroix pressed ivory opera glasses to her pale face, watching the Providence dock.
"She's arriving today, then," she murmured.
Her husband Philippe had arranged the purchase through his Santo Domingo contacts. A gift, he'd called it—the finest house slave in the Caribbean, educated and trained in French customs. "She'll elevate us above the Beaumonts and Montclairs combined."
But Philippe didn't know what Celeste knew. He hadn't heard the whispers that followed Jean from plantation to plantation across the islands. He didn't know that five men had died by their own hands after owning her. Through her opera glasses, Celeste watched the woman being led from the ship. Even at this distance, even through the morning's distortion, she could see it—that uncanny grace despite the chains. The way dock workers stopped mid-task to stare. The way even the gulls seemed to circle lower.
