Hi people, we are continuing our chess match between Paul Morphy and Daniel Harrwitz in Paris France in 1858 with game one .
It must have been a little bit daunting entering the cafe da le regence on that fist day of the match for the young Paul morphy. Just put yourself in that position for one moment. On entering the premises, it would have been fairly dimly lit with the predominant smell of coffee and conyac with the air laced with cigar smoke. In the centre of the establishment is your opponent he is surrounded by a crowd of expectant chess fans with casual onlookers and his sycophants .This was his home turf, after all.
Daniel Harrwitz was a brilliant chess player, the second best in Europe.
Paul Morphy would go on and lose this first game, much to the surprise of his companion and his backers.
After the game , Harrwitz made an insolent and impertinent gesture by approaching Morphy, taking his hand and feeling his pulse! Turning to the crowd, he shouted, "Well, this is astonishing! His pulse does not beat any faster than if he had won the game!".
Paul Morphy said nothing being a perfect gentleman. Harrwitz may have been a great chess player, but would his arrogance be his undoing.
