• Incident Synopsis: Units from Battalions 4 and 8 were dispatched to a fire in a strip shopping center. Pre-arrival information indicated that two callers had seen flames coming from the roof. E408 communicated their water supply plan and arrived on scene, reporting a one-story, middle-unit strip mall with nothing evident on side Alpha. The fire unit was identified as a hibachi grill-type restaurant. E426 and E422 established a secondary water supply and provided a side Charlie report, noting the absence of a basement. BC408 established command. E408 and TL408 reported light smoke conditions inside and stated that there had been a fire in the Alpha quadrant’s hibachi grill exhaust vent, which appeared to be out. The restaurant had been evacuated. The exterior crew of TL408 provided a roof report, finding a flat commercial roof with smoldering fire visible in an Alpha quadrant rooftop ventilation pipe. E426 stretched a hoseline to the roof and initially used a dry-chem extinguisher to attempt to extinguish the fire in the pipe. A thermal imager showed the temperature inside the vent pipe to be 500 degrees. The Bravo and Delta exposures, as well as the plenum areas, were checked and found clear of smoke and fire. BC404 was assigned Division 1 with E408, TL408, and TL410. R426 opened the side Charlie exterior doors, controlled the gas and electric utilities, and E410 and E423 established RITs on sides Alpha and Charlie. The fire was contained to the vent pipe above the hibachi grill. After performing salvage below the vent pipe, E426 flowed water into the pipe from above to ultimately extinguish the small fire. TL408 and R426 performed vertical ventilation around the rooftop vent pipe to ensure extinguishment. M408 established rehab, and after a tailboard critique, command held with 2 and 1.

• Items of Interest/Significance: Access to side Alpha was challenging due to heavy traffic in the parking lot. No units were positioned on side Charlie because of limited roadway access and mature trees. During the tailboard, various options for positioning in a nearby side Charlie parking lot were discussed, had aerial master streams been required in the rear. Command requested a health inspector, given the fire unit was a restaurant/kitchen. However, the health inspector was unavailable to respond and instead provided guidance to the on-scene fire investigator via phone, which was relayed to the business owner.
