Our adventure on Day 12 of America’s Great Loop takes an exciting yet challenging turn as we navigate our 1977 Cheoy Lee LRC through the infamous Lake Okeechobee. The day starts off with dense fog, creating a surreal atmosphere but presenting visibility challenges. Maneuvering through the water with limited sight is no easy feat, but it’s all part of the Great Loop journey!
As the fog begins to lift, we’re met with another challenge: locks. The locks along Lake Okeechobee are crucial for adjusting water levels and ensuring safe passage. Today, we pass through several of them, each offering a unique experience and a reminder of the incredible engineering that makes this route possible. Though navigating locks can be time-consuming, it’s a rewarding process that adds to the day’s adventure.
Despite the slow progress, we’re thrilled to finally cross Lake Okeechobee, a significant milestone in our Great Loop journey. The lake’s vast, open waters are breathtaking, and crossing it feels like an achievement in itself. Along the way, we’re treated to stunning views of the surrounding landscape, local wildlife, and the tranquil beauty of Florida’s waterways.
