Created on Christmas day in 1936 by C. Jim Pray, this pattern found immediate success on the steelhead waters of northern California, winning Walter Thoreson the Field and Stream contest for largest fish in the Western Rainbow Fly Division.
Hook: #6-8 3x long streamer, or salmon hook
Thread: Black
Tail: Orange hackle fibers
Body: Red chenille
Hackle: Black, stiff, shiny and long
Wing: White bucktail or polar bear
