Webinar: Do we need to think differently about suicide prevention for autistic people?

Suicide rates are shockingly high amongst autistic adults, and autistic adults often report negative experiences when trying to access support. This webinar, organised to coincide with World Suicide Prevention Day 2023, provides an urgent call to action. In the first part of the seminar, we will provide an overview of research findings from several recent studies on self-harm and suicidality. These studies highlight the need for personalised and tailored interventions to promote autonomy, independence and connectedness. They also highlight the impact of traumatic experiences, highlighting the need to address societal inequalities that lead to autistic people camouflaging and/or being victimised.

This body of knowledge leaves a lot of gaps in our understanding of how to prevent suicide in autistic people. In the second half of this seminar, we will outline ongoing research about suicidality and self-harm, and we welcome the audience to share their views about future research priorities!

This webinar is intended for anyone interested in this topic, including autistic and non-autistic people, those working or living with autistic people, and researchers.
